Born of a partnership between the design team and Willard teachers, administration and staff, the resulting Willard Intermediate School South is a facility unique to the district. Flexible learning, team teaching and collaboration are at the forefront of the design, with an emphasis on maximizing space.

The new facility offers a dynamic environment that adapts to the user. Team-teaching areas, study nooks and learning stairs emerge throughout the project. Mobile furniture empowers users to create the space that matches their need.

The Commons is carved into a variety of intimate and defined areas to promote learning and teaching throughout the day. The education wing is focused on Willard’s approach to team teaching and student-focused learning. Teams are divided into “houses,” each with four classrooms, a teacher office, and access to centralized labs, flex spaces, a team hub or “learning park,” outdoor classrooms, and storage. Houses open to the Media Center—the heart of the school. Its centralized location encourages students and teachers to use the space not as a destination, but as a classroom extension.
