Whittier Middle School shares the same design with a local rival, Irving Middle School, in Norman, Okla. The challenge was to renovate both schools with creative, diversified solutions and add inspiration to lackluster facilities. The architect focused on four key issues: overall branding and school pride, lighting solutions, traffic control and acoustical privacy.

By using a mixture of textures and colors of various vinyl and rubber flooring cut into specific patterns, the architect created a defined traffic path for students that was easy for the school to clean and maintain, while also creating a unique visual brand based on the mascot. In the low-height corridors, asymmetrical, curved acoustic ceiling panels with accent lighting allude to a higher ceiling without any modification to the structure.

The existing facility was an open classroom layout with little natural light. To maintain desired visibility, new partitions feature accent glazing and markerboards while providing acoustical privacy. Natural light was harvested from new exterior windows through this glazing and into the internal corridors via clerestory windows.
