The design challenge for the Westminster College Dolores Doré Eccles Health, Wellness and Athletic Center was to create a contextually appropriate building within its historically significant, but very progressive, campus that will serve as an activity magnet for students and staff. The program, which encompasses all aspects of health and wellness on the campus, includes a student recreation facility with athletic courts, a lap pool, weight-training area, aerobics studio, cardio-training areas, a climbing wall, running track, and locker rooms for athletic teams and students.
The mantra for the organization of the activity spaces was to avoid visible separations. To create the activity magnet that the college desired, movement needed to be sensed and felt from everywhere. The building also serves as a gathering place that attracts students who wish to exercise socially, as well as physically.
The Health, Wellness and Athletic Center assimilates into Westminster’s historic lineage while expressing a commitment to the future. Using functional adaptations of historically derived architectural elements that capture and modulate daylight from the south helps integrate the building into its historic campus context.
