Westminster College, Dolores Doré Eccles Health, Wellness and Athletic Center, and Play Field
Salt Lake City, Utah
This recreation center engages the student body in health and well-being while fitting within the context of a historic campus. The facility was designed to fit within the existing footprint of a surface parking lot.
The design integrates health into the college through a central campus facility where healthful activities are celebrated. Features include a leisure pool, four-lane lap pool, weight-training area, aerobics studio, three-story climbing wall, student lounge, concessions, numerous classrooms, administration and a multi-use gymnasium with a suspended running track.
The design maximizes the different heights of the gymnasium, pool and locker rooms to provide space for the School of Nursing at two-thirds of the cost of a standalone building. The nursing school includes exam rooms, a learning lab and health-occupations classrooms. The design of the building encourages interdisciplinary involvement: the climbing wall penetrates the nursing school floor, allowing nursing students to watch climbers from their lounge.
The facility opens onto a full-size NCAA-sanctioned soccer field with synthetic turf elevated above a 370-stall parking garage, effectively hiding cars from the nearby residential neighborhood. Another challenge of the project was working around a natural creek that runs through the site.
