Western Michigan University, Heritage Hall
Kalamazoo, Michigan
Western Michigan University (WMU) was founded in 1903 and built its historic home, East Campus, on about 20 acres on Prospect Hill overlooking the city of Kalamazoo. The site is home to the original East Hall building, which was the birthplace of WMU. Over time, the University expanded westward to include West Campus. After falling into disrepair after years of underuse, the team was challenged to renovate the historic East Hall into a new alumni center.
The central grand stair and main corridors were retained, emphasizing the original horizontal and vertical circulation through the building. The multifunctional building features office space for the Office of Development and Alumni Relations, meeting rooms for alumni and University use, as well as a large banquet area. Displays of historic elements and imagery throughout the public spaces allow visitors to reminisce, learn, and connect with campus.
The transformed Heritage Hall achieved LEED Platinum certification and is currently the most sustainable building on Western’s campus. It has become a touchstone of the campus experience and is a distinguished asset for WMU’s campus and the community.
