Built in 1911, Van Meter Hall was one of the first buildings constructed for Western Kentucky University. Nestled on the outskirts of a historic Civil War fort, the building originally was designed as an administration building and lecture hall. It has since become the main performance venue for the university.

Last renovated in 1971, the building needed a major renovation to become a state-of-the-art performance facility. With a primary goal of preserving the historical character of the building, the design team created a sensitive renovation and addition that provides additional performance and public support spaces.

The design improved theater acoustics utilizing baffles, acoustical curtains and a custom-designed orchestra shell to create a tunable space worthy of performances of the highest caliber. The entire auditorium floor was replaced, and seating was reconfigured on the main floor and balconies to improve sightlines.

The stagehouse was rebuilt and expanded to add a full fly loft and orchestra pit. The result is a facility that blends historical character with the best possible elements of a modern performance venue.
