Western Kentucky University, Florence Schneider Hall, Renovation and Addition
Bowling Green, Kentucky
Originally constructed in 1929, this Georgian Revival-style building was once among the university’s first structures. Having fallen into disrepair, the building was abandoned and vacant for several years.
To restore the historic structure, Western Kentucky University undertook a complete renovation, transforming the building into the facility that is home to the Academy of Mathematics and Sciences in Kentucky, a program offering on-campus residential accommodations for early-admission, gifted high school students with aptitudes for mathematics and science.
The new facility features student living spaces, social areas, a computer lab and collaborative learning spaces, in addition to office spaces for faculty and staff administering the program. As part of the renovation, all of the building’s systems were replaced, including doors and windows; the roof; interior construction, finishes and fixtures; and mechanical, plumbing, electrical, life safety, communications, information-technology and security systems.
