Western Carolina University, Courtyard Dining Hall
Cullowhee, North Carolina
The new Courtyard Dining Hall encompasses 45,000 square feet on two floors and was designed to expand Western Carolina University’s seating and food-service capacity to accommodate projected enrollment growth. It is adjacent to two new residence halls, which together will form a traditional collegiate quadrangle in the campus core.
To complement the existing and planned campus, the Courtyard Dining Hall facade is constructed of red brick with light cast-stone accents in Georgian expression. The first floor has two franchise venues and a convenience store that can function separately from the rest of the building. The rest of the first floor arranges food services at the edges of an open seating area, creating a piazza-like sense of public space.
The second-floor cafeteria follows suit, dispersing thematically organized stations, such as stone-oven pizza, international cuisine, home cooking, sandwich deli, steakhouse salad bar and a dessert bar.
The interior design creates intimate spaces following the thematic divisions, but is united by the piazza motif, shown in the radiating geometry of the ceiling and monumental stair.
