West Leyden High School Courtyard Addition and Renovations
Northlake, Illinois
The project consisted of a multiphased addition and renovation of a high school. The primary objective was to update the kitchen and cafeteria to serve a greater number of students at each lunch period so that the school could reduce lunch periods from 5 to 3 per day. The reduction of lunch periods enabled the school to have more flexibility scheduling for students.
Space limitations led to construction of a two-story addition within an existing courtyard. The district also needed to update the library/media center to better serve students. The first floor of the addition is a commons/cafeteria expansion, serving as additional cafeteria, but also functioning as a study space. It is equipped with technology to accommodate meetings and presentations. The second floor houses a new media center with the technology and functionality to accommodate a wide range of student activities. It accommodates traditional library functions as well as support classrooms with operable partitions, maker spaces with 3-D printers, and breakout spaces with movable furniture and interactive monitors.
Renovated second floor spaces adjacent to the new media center consolidate multiple student services into a single location. Student services offices, college/career center, dean’s office, and study hall were relocated to be adjacent to the new media center. These adjacencies provide better communication and coordination among these various functions.
The affected spaces have high traffic flow, so the materials selected resist damage, require less maintenance, have a long life cycle and include an abundance of sustainable characteristics. Materials such as terrazzo and porcelain tile were installed in the highest traffic areas, and other spaces were finished with low-maintenance luxury vinyl tiles or carpet tiles.
