In an effort to further revitalize downtown Waterbury, Conn., the architect was selected to design an 800-student performing- and visual-arts magnet school, and also renovate and restore the historic Palace Theatre.
The Waterbury Arts Magnet School fully integrates with the Palace Theatre, offering students a unique learning experience. In addition to academic and multimedia classroom space and an inspiring interior design organized around a four-story atrium, the school has performance areas for theater, music and voice—all featuring the latest technologies. Because the school connects to the Palace, students have a rare opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a Broadway-caliber theater and outdoor amphitheater.
Skilled artisans, under the direction of the architect, restored the shell of the Palace Theatre, built in 1922, to reflect the original Thomas Lamb design. The completed theater welcomes visitors with a sparkling entryway, gilded ceilings and frescos, and lush carpets. The Palace now has become a premier venue for off-Broadway plays and other first-rate entertainment.
