Washington University School of Medicine, Farrell Learning and Teaching Center
St. Louis, Missouri
The architect was commissioned to design a learning-teaching center that will serve as the “heart” of this urban medical campus. The program for the center explores the connections between the campus objectives of curricular changes with the quality and configuration of the spaces for learning. The scope of the project addresses the development of learning environments that inspire students and faculty, and honors Washington University School of Medicine’s core mission: teaching, research and patient care.
Washington University School of Medicine’s primary programmatic goals:
•Provide technologically advanced teaching environments in support of a dynamic curriculum.
•Be the heart and identity of the school.
•Offer first- and second-year medical students spaces supporting a variety of learning styles.
•Develop study spaces and teaching spaces to link the school’s clinical and basic sciences divisions.
The center serves to advance Washington University School of Medicine’s position as a leader in biomedical education and to sustain its tradition of academic excellence by providing teaching labs, discussion rooms, study areas, a high-tech clinical skills suite with exam rooms, a U-shaped case-study room and lecture spaces—all designed for optimal faculty/student interaction.
