The construction of Williamsburg-James City County’s newest high school was supported by a $39.8 million bond referendum. Warhill High School serves 1,250 students and is designed with core spaces to accommodate 1,450 students. The vision for this project was created during intense design workshops with teachers, administrators, community members and students. The result is a spacious, well-lighted, functional, technology-advanced facility for this historic Virginia community.
Warhill High School was built from the ground up with technology integration in mind, and contains an extensive array of technology and software that accommodates different learning styles, differentiated instruction and research-based instructional strategies.
Public spaces in this two-story facility such as the auditorium, cafeteria and gymnasium are separated from the academic spaces. This school also accommodates two distinct magnet components focusing on pre-engineering, technology and pre-medical.
A two-story media center also is part of the design; science labs and classrooms surround the second level to create a science department. A second-floor bridge, with room for administrative office space, connects two classroom wings on the upstairs portion of the building. A courtyard is adjacent to the media center. Daylight is maximized throughout the building with clerestory windows.
All materials used in the construction are highly durable: a structured-steel frame, utility brick, architectural precast concrete, aluminum composite metal panels, aluminum storefront exterior windows, aluminum curtainwall entries and exposed steel trusses.
