Virginia Military Institute, Cormack and Cocke Hall Renovations
Lexington, Virginia
Design team: TMP Architecture (Recreation Design Consultant); Dave Larson, AIA; Laura Casai, IIDA, LEEP AP
This comprehensive Corps Physical Training Facilities project involved the historical renovation of two academic and physical education/training facilities for Virginia Military Institute (VMI). The design team’s intent was to “salute the past and welcome the future” with this extensive renovation for the school’s physical training programs, exercise science department, and NCAA wrestling programs.
The project adaptively reused Cormack Hall, originally an equestrian training facility, for the relocation of the VMI Department of Physical Education. Cocke Hall also was completely reprogrammed after moving the wrestling facility to Cormack Hall. The comprehensive project includes new classrooms and administrative spaces, fitness and weight training facilities, locker rooms, and practice and competition spaces.
Outside Cocke Hall, a new, triple-arched memorial invites visitors to reflect while visiting Memorial Garden. Accompanying landscaping improvements to Memorial Garden were also part of this upgrade. Both projects have received LEED Silver certification.
