Virginia Commonwealth University, Harris Hall – Focused Inquiry Learning Lounge (FILL)
Richmond, Virginia
Approached by the university’s Associate Vice Provost for Instruction and Student Success, KSA designed a Focused Inquiry Learning Lounge (FILL): a new, unique space intended to promote the active investigation of knowledge and meet the needs of Freshmen Focused Inquiry classes. The new environment provides space for collaboration, student interaction, presentation practice and writing instruction.
The design establishes a multifunction environment with finely tuned individual classrooms clustered around a central “living room” space. Each classroom is configured specifically to align with a distinct teaching or learning style. The furniture and finishes in each room coincide with each distinct style; effervescence in collaborative areas counteracts refinement in heads-down work areas.
The lively central “living room” is delineated from the larger facility by use of transparent glazing and vibrant graphics. The glazing was designed as a storefront, and glimpses inside entice those passing by. The juxtaposition of colors, patterns and visibility of the space creates an invitation for long study sessions as well as quick breaks to recharge in between classes.
