Virginia Commonwealth University, Academic Learning Commons
Richmond, Virginia
The new Academic Learning Commons at Virginia Commonwealth University is a four-story educational center housing classrooms, tiered-seating lecture halls, auditoriums, student lounge space, research laboratories, multipurpose workrooms, a writing center, and faculty offices for several different schools of study within VCU, including the School of Social Work and Office of the Vice Provost of Learning Innovation & Student Success.
Baskervill provided furniture selection and procurement for the entire project, focusing on fresh, lively pieces with a mid-century modern vibe to complement the center’s focus on dynamic and active learning collaboration.
Of note are the building’s numerous common areas, including The Incubator, a demonstrational classroom and workspace that will be used to study how students best utilize learning environments. Baskervill partnered with furniture manufacturer Herman Miller, dealer American Office, and Virginia Commonwealth University to furnish the space, part of an innovative design research program to test the latest in furniture trends that support creative and engaging learning.
