After referendums for a new elementary failed, the district’s superintendent addressed the problem of aging facilities by shifting student populations and changing functions of the district’s newer facilities, while building a new high school and closing two older elementary buildings. Now a source of pride to the entire district, the new 600-student high school provides comfortable, new teaching spaces to enhance the educational process.
The school is designed to allow public access to the facility’s 1,200-seat, three-court gymnasium and 645-seat, fly-loft theater, while maintaining security and separation of the academic spaces. The design also incorporates security features to lock down the building during school hours; all access is through the office area. The school’s office also has the ability to lock down the academic wing from the public areas in case of emergency.
New education spaces are equipped for future technology and include a fiber-optic backbone to each classroom that terminates in a teacher-controlled technology cabinet. This creates teaching tools of the room’s computers by networking them into the room’s overhead LCD projector.
Building for the future, the facility incorporates energy-saving features such as improved insulation values, geothermal mechanical systems, low-E glass, and advanced lighting and controls.
