Vaughn College Cafeteria
East Elmhurst, New York
Because of its continued growth and the addition of a residence hall in 2008, Vaughn College’s original basement-level cafeteria was overdue for expansion and replacement. The new cafeteria was built partly within an underused existing maintenance space at the center of the building—originally a 1930s airplane hangar—that was identified for development in a master plan prepared earlier by Graf & Lewent Architects. The existing space was expanded with a Butler Building addition to create the new cafeteria and multipurpose facility. The existing space benefited from high-ceiling volume and ample daylighting, which was continued in the design of the pre-engineered addition, as was the exposed industrial infrastructure.
The project included a full new kitchen, optimized to provide offerings most sought after by students and faculty. The cafeteria is designed to serve multiple functions, including fund-raising and community events. An integrated audiovisual system, programmable indirect lighting, movable furniture and a landscaped outdoor courtyard contributed to this goal. Graf & Lewent assisted Vaughn in obtaining grants that helped make the project a reality.
