Vanderbilt Heart & Vascular Institute relocated key procedural areas to the fifth floor of the 11-story Critical Care Tower on the Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) campus. This Nashville-based medical center is among the nation’s premier institutions of academic medicine.

Academic medicine’s three-pronged guiding principles of teaching, clinical disciplines and research (including evidence-based design) were incorporated into the design approach. As an environment to deliver the latest procedures and technologies while facilitating learning, the fifth floor unit is also designed to accommodate future advancements. The program includes an electrophysiology lab, cardiac catheterization lab, cardiac observation unit, and two hybrid operating room suites, totaling nine procedure rooms.

Unique attributes of the Institute’s space include:

• The Radial Lounge is an innovative approach encouraging immediate ambulation. The usual bed is replaced with a recliner in a spa-like environment.

• Patient recovery (PACU) has separate rooms for privacy rather than curtained-off patient spaces. Decentralized nurse work areas aid patient observation.

• The hybrid operating rooms are designed with the latest recommended square footage to accommodate the most advanced technology.
