The form of this building evolved as a direct response to the predominant site feature—the Green Lane Reservoir that borders the edge of the site. The design intent was to forge a relationship between the building and the reservoir; the three-dimensional organization of the building becomes an embodiment of the site. The public functions of the building are organized along the eastern edge of the site, and the academic functions splay along a northwest axis to provide expansive views of the reservoir and to capture maximum daylighting within classrooms. The courtyard between these two building components embraces the reservoir and is hinged by an administrative block along the northern edge. This administrative block provides a public identity to the community at large. The library anchors the composition at the heart of the building as it meshes with the site and reservoir beyond.
The new middle school not only provides a state-of-the-art facility for learning—the building itself is a tool for learning that fosters each student’s appreciation of the natural world.
