This addition serves as a new entrance to the campus. The building’s main entrance sits atop a grand, arcing stair segmented by large exterior planters leading to a rooftop terrace above the lecture hall. This terrace overlooks a sunken courtyard at the same level as the ground floor, creating exterior rooms that face south and embrace the surrounding building.
Locally quarried stone, tinted green glass and brick compose the exterior material palette. The focus on incorporating sustainable-design principles throughout the process—attention to recycled materials, use of natural light and alternative energy sources—resulted in an environmentally conscious solution.
The educational program required six new science lab/classrooms and a new 60-seat hall that offers flexible lecture space. The building “stacks” labs on three floors with office and prep rooms between each; the ground-floor lab and office spaces have direct access to a two-zone greenhouse.
Several entities—including the county, state, architect and a private donor—worked together to meet the design challenges and make this project a success.
