The comprehensive renovation of a lecture hall in the heart of University of Washington’s Seattle Campus maintains the existing capacity while facilitating live demonstrations through upgraded classroom technology. Bagley Hall’s 300-seat classroom serves large lecture-style science classes.
The quality of the learning space in the lecture hall was improved significantly through new fixed furniture, audio visual systems, lighting, and acoustical improvements. The existing structure and full height of the room volume were exposed above ceiling clouds at the front of the classroom, making low-hazard demonstrations possible. Cameras and a custom-designed mobile demonstration enclosure can contain explosive and hazardous items for real-time observation.
Existing tiers were modified to meet contemporary codes for egress and accessibility, and seating in the space was maximized without compromising viewing angles. Acoustic reflectors are strategically situated along the perimeter walls and the ceiling to reinforce the un-amplified voice of the lecturer. The design team developed varying perforations, reflectance, and angles required for the reflectors, which cantilever from the existing walls as much as 7 feet over the seating to optimize acoustics.
