This project is the centerpiece of the University of Utah’s new 2,300-bed, student living/learning community. The center is the symbolic “living room” for the neighborhoods, and includes dining areas, a living/learning center, technology rooms, computer labs, post office, ATM, game room, convenience store, faculty office/work spaces, community space, fitness facilities and conference center.
Situated at the geographic center of the community, the east-west orientation responds to primary pedestrian paths and capitalizes on panoramic mountain views. Solar gain is controlled by custom-designed perforated copper sunscreens and automated windowshades. Energy modeling is in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy facilitated the design and the site response. Located on a National Historic Landmark site (Fort Douglas), the structure is brick, native sandstone and copper, complementing the historic architecture and blending harmoniously with the Utah landscape.
Serving the needs of the university’s student population, the Heritage Center and the surrounding student neighborhoods will serve as the Olympic Village for the 2002 winter games in Salt Lake City.
