Situated on a tightly constrained infill site next to Varsity Stadium on the downtown University of Toronto St. George campus, the Goldring Centre forms a vital hub for sports, research and therapy serving both high-performance varsity athletes and the wider campus community.
The program includes a competition Federation of International Basketball Associations and International Federation of Volleyball standard 2,000-seat basketball and volleyball field house, a large strength and conditioning centre (SCC), and a sports medicine clinic and sports science research laboratories. The field house requirements were too large to fit within the permissible zoning envelope setbacks on this compact site. The solution placed the courts below grade, where they could occupy the full width of the property and permit a visual connection from the street through clerestory glazing instead of blank walls behind seating. In the SCC, tiered ranks of exercise equipment mirror the stadium seating opposite, creating a large city-scaled room.
The new facility is visually open, displaying the activities within, inviting participation, and promoting accessible wellness and fitness for both the campus and the city.
