University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Natalie L. Haslam Music Center
Knoxville, Tennessee
The basic direction for the Natalie L. Haslam Music Center was to maximize space and usability for music teaching, practice, rehearsal and presentation.
Three of the building’s most prominent grand features include the Sandra G. Powell Recital Hall, the Central Building Atrium and the Monumental Staircase. The building also features a music library, practice rooms, classrooms, and office and studio spaces.
The recital hall ties in with the overall direction of the facility by maximizing space and usability for music teaching, practice, rehearsal and presentation. It is designed to hold more than 400 students and audience members on the main floor and mezzanine levels.
To enhance new user wayfinding in such a large building, the central atrium and staircase provide orientation for users to the wings and the two adjacent three-story performance and rehearsal spaces, music library, a hierarchy of building classrooms, school and band administrative areas and faculty studio offices.
Natural new construction materials were selected for low environmental impact and to respond to the building acoustical requirements.
