The Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute is on the Health Sciences campus of the University of Southern California, northeast of downtown Los Angeles. This building’s unique architectural presence initiates a new design direction for the Keck School of Medicine. In addition to its signature design, the building responds to the program, site context and climate of Southern California in many practical and energy-efficient ways .
Phase I of the new Research Quadrangle, linking the academic and clinical areas of the campus, serves as a state-of-the-art research facility for basic and clinical neuroscience. The five-story building is organized as two interlocking L-shaped bars containing laboratories, support spaces and researchers’ offices.
A vivarium and nuclear magnetic resonance suite are on the basement level. The ground floor includes three laboratory suites, a large conference/seminar room, administration offices, a cafe and a loading dock. The balance of the building houses 24 laboratory suites, support space and office suites with mechanical space in the rooftop penthouse.
