The largest public project in North Dakota history, the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences, re-thinks everything about the delivery of medical and health sciences education. The facility houses a first-of-its-kind program with a goal of training health care professionals and keeping more of them in North Dakota.
The challenge: Co-locate eight medical, health sciences, and basic sciences programs—each with different and highly specialized, classroom, simulation, and lab needs—into eight collaborative, interprofessional learning communities, each with 100 students from all of the disciplines.
In these learning communities, classroom environments strike a balance of active, collaborative, and technologically supported learning approaches. Gone are departmentally owned lecture spaces; in their place are shared, flexible classrooms. These classrooms range in size from large-scale auditoriums with swing seating to huddle rooms with interactive displays and writable wall surfaces.
Custom-built interaction tables enable students to share content from their laptops to their own table monitor, to another table, or to the classroom’s main screens. In the labs, practice exam rooms, and simulation rooms, students can gain access to information independently or collaborate with their neighbors.
