University of North Carolina Wilmington, Seahawk Village and Seahawk Landing Student Housing
Wilmington, North Carolina
In developing Seahawk Village and Seahawk Landing residence complexes, the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) sought to create a space in which upperclassmen want to live, learn and grow—and keep underclassmen on campus. This was achieved by providing apartment-style living with full amenities on campus.
Seahawk Village houses 524 students in apartments with double beds, full kitchens, washers and dryers, and all amenities. This community includes six apartment buildings, a community activity center and a swimming pool. Seahawk Village was so successful that the residence complex sold out in a four-hour period to an overnight, standing-in-line student population. The overflow of more than 400 students from that event soon assisted in populating Seahawk Landing.
Seahawk Landing houses 609 students in seven buildings and includes a fitness center, convenience store and coffee shop. Students enjoy features such as private bedrooms and full-appliance packages. The complex also includes a pool with bath house and sunbathing area.
The extraordinary success and popularity of these upperclassmen-only residence complexes has led to Phase III housing, which now is under construction. When Phase III is finished, UNCW will have completed a $116 million housing venture that has added 1,795 beds to its campus.
From the beginning, the concept was to create a residential quadrant on campus; these projects have succeeded in making that concept a reality.
