University of Nevada, Nell J. Redfield Building

In 1995, the Nell J. Redfield Foundation donated land for the campus, southwest of the junction of Mount Rose Highway and U.S. 395. A year later, the foundation pledged $5 million to help construct the inaugural building. The Nevada legislature, in 1999, allocated $5.2 million for the project.
Situated between Reno and Carson City, Nev., the Redfield Campus is a partnership of the University of Nevada, Reno, Truckee Meadows Community College, Western Nevada Community College and the private sector. It is designed to provide higher education and promote economic diversification along the U.S. 395 corridor.
The Redfield Campus will offer new programs, complement existing ones and enhance educational partnerships in northwestern Nevada. In doing so, it will emphasize innovative programs and programs that emphasize career development. The campus will be a bridge to the community, and provide lifelong learning opportunities in an accessible and welcoming environment.
Construction began on the Redfield campus in February 2004, in cooperation with the state of Nevada and the University of Nevada. The Nell J. Redfield Building is the first in the campus master plan. It contains technologically sophisticated classrooms and labs, distance-learning education technology, earth-science and computer-skills labs, as well as a skilled-nursing center.
The Nell J. Redfield Building was constructed using a structural-steel frame, with exteriors consisting of concrete masonry units, brick and exterior insulation finish systems. Interior construction consists of metal stud framing with attached gypsum board. All other finishes are surface applied.
An agreement between Advanced Thermal Systems, Inc., of Reno and the University of Nevada—Reno will bring advanced geothermal technology to provide heat and power for the campus, and provide a new source of clean, affordable power for northern Nevada.
