University of Missouri—Kansas City, Miller Nichols Library, Information Commons Renovation

The architect assisted in forging a new concept in libraries for the 21st century by transforming the existing Miller Nichols Library reference room into an Information Commons, a design concept that incorporates a multimedia and data-retrieval system with practical study areas and resource placement. The architect was to provide a work-space for students, faculty and library staff that facilitates and nurtures collaboration among all groups, while providing a technology-friendly atmosphere.
To promote this collaborative environment, the entry space was designed with a warm, welcoming residential feel, dramatically different from the conventional institutional setting. The furniture selection complements this atmosphere while remaining extremely versatile, allowing users to adapt the workspaces to their needs for group or individual study. The furniture also allows for growth and change in technology over the lifetime of the space.
The furniture and layout provide patrons with university computers, as well as people-friendly alcoves and workstations that supply access to both data and power connections. Students can access the Internet or log onto the campus network.
