University of Michigan, William Davidson Player Development Center
Ann Arbor, Michigan
The university’s new Basketball Player Development Center serves the men’s and womens’ teams. The programs previously could practice only on Crisler Center’s competition court.
The teams’ two-court practice gymnasium is the hub of the new facility, with surrounding cardio, strength and conditioning, hydrotherapy, training and video-review areas. An observation balcony overlooks the gym, enabling coaches to monitor activities; it serves as a powerful recruiting tool. Coaching staffs and administrative support are housed in the office level. Team and coaches’ locker rooms, a recruiting suite and the lobby’s team memorabilia and Hall of Fame complete the project.
Placing a large addition adjacent to Crisler Arena’s signature oval shape was a challenge. The placement of a major structural element was required to accommodate a phase of the adjacent Crisler concourse expansion.
Contextual materials include brick and cast stone for large areas of the facade; the corner lobby is contrasted with light, reflective materials such as glass, aluminum and metal panels. Natural light permeates the facility, allowing for a variety of functions—beyond practice—when necessary.
