University of Michigan, Law Library, The Joseph and Edythe Jackier Rare Book Room

The Joseph and Edythe Jackier Rare Book Room creates a visible monument reflecting and representing the University of Michigan Law School’s place in the history of American law.
The Rare Book Room is wrapped in custom makore millwork trimmed with Honduran mahogany, and is bathed in specially designed incandescent ambient and task lighting. The reading and storage areas are climate-controlled, below-grade spaces designed to preserve the collection.
The room consists of 750 square feet of collection storage and 650 square feet of exhibit and reader space. The wood-paneled walls, shelving and furniture are custom-designed by the architect to convey the unique qualities of this library. The reading room is fully carpeted and, with a high ceiling, it creates an acoustically dampened environment conducive to intensive research.
The location and lighting technology used in the Rare Book Room and storage areas combine to shield the rare books from the effects of ultraviolet light. The spaces also have a fire-suppression system and security measures.
