University of Miami School of Business, Graduate School
Coral Gables, Florida
The architect provided architectural and interior design services for the 30,000-square-foot Graduate School. Amenities include a stairway, a computer laboratory, a “trading floor/information center,” conference rooms and classrooms.
The objective was to provide an upscale environment for graduate-level classes and lectures. Warm and timeless materials, such as maple and cherry wood floors, fabric wallcovering and wood paneling throughout the space, granite slabs, and stainless steel and bronze metals were incorporated. The spiral staircase leads students from the fourth-floor lobby to additional lounge space on the fifth floor. A skylight above the internal staircase provides natural lighting to the information resource center and lobby areas below.
The lobby area also incorporates a high-tech information center kiosk, which includes a ticker bar for stock-market activities. The classrooms are equipped with built-in computer stations for each student, electronically controlled screens, specialty lighting and acoustical enhancements.
“Love the entry and staircase. Nice use of glass walls and soft colors.”–2001 jury
