One of the earliest buildings on UMass Lowell’s campus, Coburn Hall has been a prominent school landmark since its construction in 1897. Having served a central role in the history and physical landscape of the university, this aging structure needed to be restored to better and higher use. The next generation of Coburn Hall has been designed to be an innovative center for research, exploration, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
A comprehensive renovation of the existing building combined with construction of a contemporary expansion, the new building houses the university’s College of Education and Psychology Department. In addition to faculty offices, work rooms, event hall, and assorted labs and observation suites, the design features innovative demo spaces where education and psychology students can experiment with different presentation and communication strategies, stretching academic understanding of learning and teaching methodologies.
