The Gossett Football Team House project is a renovation and expansion of a 1970s building in the endzone of Byrd Stadium at the University of Maryland. The facility incorporates all football operations, academic support and team dining facilities under one roof. The improvements include a 19,000-square-foot expansion, a new scoreboard and renovation of 45,000 square feet of existing space. The building remained occupied and in operation throughout construction.
The expansion includes two new pavilions. The first houses the academic and career-development center, administrative offices and a computer room for 30 students. The second includes a new food-service area and a multipurpose room, which is used as a dining room, meeting room and site of news conferences.
The final phase incorporates a 170-seat auditorium and a Hall of Fame corridor, which connects all three phases. The auditorium space includes extra-large chairs to accommodate players, and an audiovisual and sound system. The auditorium and Hall of Fame are connected by a semicircular space, which functions as a new entrance into the football team facility.
The semicircular facade welcomes visitors with carefully executed details in precast concrete and masonry. On the interior, complex designs are seen throughout in the terrazzo flooring of the entry and multipurpose room, and wood and metal accents are incorporated to enhance the feeling of richness and grandeur.
