The new College of Education, Health and Rehabilitation at the University of Maine at Farmington is Maine’s first LEED-registered building to be designed by a Maine architect. The facility is situated to take advantage of solar orientation and natural daylighting.
The University of Maine at Farmington campus is known for its active “green” stance at all levels, so the design has taken advantage of an array of sustainable materials and practices:
•Geothermal heating and cooling.
•High-performance wall systems.
•Local materials and workmanship.
•Incentives for recycling and responsible transportation.
•Sustainable landscape design.
•Green-roof technology.
•Education in sustainable design and ownership.
This building will consolidate programs for the College of Education, Health and Rehabilitation, which enrolls half of Farmington’s students, and it will provide spaces for functions never before fully realized at the college. In addition to faculty offices and classrooms, the building provides space for ITV/ATM classrooms, the Instructional Materials/Assistive Technology Resource Center, meeting and conference rooms equipped for teleconferencing, and Everyone’s Resource Depot, which is a distribution point for donated educational materials.
