University of Kansas School of Medicine, Univ. of Kansas Hospital, Center for Advanced Heart Care
Kansas City, Kansas
The Center for Advanced Heart Care at The University of Kansas Hospital is devoted to diagnosing and treating heart disease with advanced clinical protocols and cutting-edge technology. The new five-story facility integrates both visually and physically with the existing hospital, as well as the surrounding urban fabric.
The existing Bell Hospital and the new Heart Care Center are integrated on the ground level via the new emergency department and a public promenade. Height variations and architectural elements, however, differentiate the new building and provide wayfinding cues to visitors. Natural light, expansive views, artwork and a soothing color palette enhance the healing environment.
Careful planning with clinicians and staff resulted in a floor plan that reinforces the patient and staff experience and carefully separates the differing service lines. As one moves from the promenade to the procedure areas, spaces become more private. On the patient floors, decentralized nursing keeps caregivers near patients. The patient-centered design includes designated patient cardio tracks, family alcoves with overnight accommodations in patient rooms, and VIP suites with separate guest rooms.
“Functional layout. The family areas were given some semblance of privacy. Nicely done.”–2008 jury
