University of Kansas School of Medicine, Univ. of Kansas Hospital, Cancer Ctr. and Medical Pavilion
Westwood, Kansas
The Cancer Center at The University of Kansas Hospital’s Westwood campus provides cancer patients a single location for all cancer-treatment services— from early detection through breast cancer survivorship—all within a comfortable, healing environment.
The design converted a 1950s-era office building with a distinguished history (the headquarters and birthplace of Sprint) into a new, state-of-the-art cancer center. Circulation and easy wayfinding have been integrated into every aspect of the design. The level of detail and finish addresses the quiet dignity and purposefulness of each element within the total composition. The facility resembles a boutique hotel rather than a medical center. The treatment areas, situated on the third “tree top” level, have translucent dividers that allow natural light to enter the space while maintaining patient privacy. Patients can control their environments, including adjusting speakers and lighting from their recliners.
Each of these elements contributes to patient comfort and transforms patient care into a holistic healing experience with an emphasis on the well-being of the patient, as well as families and loved ones.
“The design creates a dignified, tasteful, comforting, timeless environment for those dealing with the most serious of situations. Excellent!”–2008 jury
