University of Kansas, Krehbiel Scholarship Hall
Lawrence, Kansas
Situated adjacent to the University of Kansas campus, the new three-story Krehbiel Scholarship Hall was designed to blend with the historic neighborhood’s turn-of-the-century homes. By organizing the hall orthogonally to the grid of the street, and breaking down the massing, scale and materials, the building achieves a strong relationship with the rhythms and patterns of the neighborhood.
By building Krehbiel Hall on a previously developed site, the university reduces sprawl and avoids the need for new infrastructure. A geothermal mechanical system uses the Earth’s relatively constant temperature to provide heating and cooling for the building. Although no energy modeling was performed on this project, studies of similar installations have shown an estimated 21 percent reduction in energy usage with this type of mechanical system.
Native Kansas limestone and locally manufactured brick comprise the building’s exterior skin. Recovered railing elements, ironwork, spindles, wood paneling and a pendant light fixture were recovered from previously razed buildings on the KU campus and incorporated into the building’s interior. Daylight was maximized throughout all private and public spaces.
“A unique and warm, home-like atmosphere that blends well into the surrounding neighborhood. The recreation patio and outside dining area are a nice connection to the outdoors.”–2009 jury
