Named for a pioneer in accessibility for people with disabilities, Timothy J. Nugent Hall is the first new residence hall on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in more than 40 years.
Nugent Hall is much more than a residence hall: The first floor houses the Beckwith Program, a unique partnership between the Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services, the College of Applied Health Sciences, and University Housing.
Students in the Beckwith Program are university students with severe physical disabilities. Nugent Hall is beyond ADA-compliant, featuring the only commercially installed SureHands life system in the country, proximity readers, adjustable furniture, wireless paging, remote-controlled blinds and roll-in showers on the first floor.
The top three floors in Nugent Hall house students with and without disabilities, integrating a community of diverse individuals in a welcoming, open environment. The layout of the new residence hall helps to foster interaction among residents.
Nugent Hall, phase A, has achieved LEED silver certification for sustainability.
