The Engineering Innovation Building, for a rapidly growing College of Engineering, is home to the Chemical Engineering, Civil & Materials Engineering, and Mechanical & Industrial Engineering programs. The building features 21 research labs and the only high-bay structural testing laboratory in the Chicago area.
The high-bay lab attracts not only students and faculty, but also industry partners and researchers who can test large-scale structural components and determine how they will behave under a variety of loading conditions. The bay itself is impressive, as it sits on a six-foot-thick reinforced concrete strong floor and features a 30-foot-high-by-6-foot-thick L-shaped reactive wall. In addition to the large bridge and highway scale research done within this state-of-the-art science building, exceedingly small, nanoscale research is done on components like those that will drive the next generation of thermal batteries. Vibration minimization was critical, resulting in a significantly reinforced building structure.
Efficiencies were realized through modular design concepts. Sustainable building systems and green materials were integrated throughout with a target of LEED Gold certification.
