The College of Education’s home is the Teachers College complex—two separate buildings that had been joined with three additions. The result was six disorienting levels cascading down a steep hillside with no discernable main entry or cohesive identity.
Reorientation of the complex with a new façade addition seamlessly respects historical context and features a new entrance that fronts onto an activated quadrangle oriented axially in conjunction with redesigned open space and pedestrian circulation systems. These bold moves physically and outwardly express a new identity for the college and demonstrate that historic assets can indeed generate the excitement and functionality proffered by newer campus development.
Breakthrough wayfinding improvements include a new circulation core that serves all levels (previously lacking) and faces a new double-height congregative lobby. The upgrades completely rethink building support functions, and a new hillside stair connects upper and lower campus.
Some existing spaces of special historical importance were preserved and enhanced. These spaces informed the design of the remaining interior environment, blending traditional architectural expression with modern materials and furnishings to create a compellingly holistic setting.
