University of Central Florida, Harris Corporation Engineering Center (Engineering III Building)
Orlando, Florida
The Harris Corporation Engineering Center (Engineering III Building) is a prominent addition to the University of Central Florida campus that consolidates the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (SEECS)—one of the 10 largest such programs in the country—under one roof.
The building facilitates advanced research and includes specialized simulation, virtual computer and research labs, three caves, technical demonstration facilities, seminar rooms, classrooms, auditoriums and faculty offices. A prestigious list of sponsor organizations and agencies, including NASA, Lockheed Martin, the U.S. Army, the NSA, Motorola, Sun Microsystems, Lucent Technologies, Oracle, Emerson and Intel, provide research funding.
The architectural design and construction is a bold juxtaposition of sleek metal, shimmering glass, multiple tones of brick, and stark concrete. It rises impressively from an environmentally friendly landscape accented with bamboo stalks, recycled rubber tire-mulched garden areas, palm trees and a flowing lawn.
The striking metal hood overhanging the front entranceway invites passage into the four-story central atrium, a space that welcomes a flood of natural light by way of glass curtainwalls.
