Union Township School Corporation is in a rapidly growing area undergoing a transition from farmland to suburban community. Improvements to the Union Township Middle/Wheeler High School enhanced offerings for academics, created a performing-arts center and expanded offerings for athletic/physical-education.
The academic wings of the building were remodeled to expand the science labs, and classrooms were added for the high school and middle school curriculums. A new common cafeteria/kitchen was added near the center of the building to serve all students. The new performing-arts center includes an auditorium with a full-fly stage, as well as music classrooms. The athletic/physical-education facilities included a swimming pool, lockers and fieldhouse.
The additions can be secured from the rest of the building for evening use. Of these spaces, the most heavily used is the fieldhouse, which has a 1/10-mile track around an open floor, which is used for basketball, volleyball, tennis, golf practice and baseball practice. The entrance to the addition is through a covered walkway and spacious lobby that links the various spaces.
