Completed in 1907, the academic complex of Mahan, Sampson and Maury Halls at the United States Naval Academy (USNA) was the core of the campus. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961. Over the years, the trio of Beaux Arts-style buildings suffered from various unsympathetic alterations (mainly interior spaces). By the late 1990s, the grand library space sat unused, and the flanking classroom buildings were outdated.
A master plan was developed to convert the complex into a new center for the humanities.
The exterior finishes of granite, terra cotta and glazed brick were cleaned, repaired and repointed. Inside, classrooms, labs and offices have high-tech communications systems and educational teaching devices, including audiovisual equipment, computer access flooring and raceways. Sustainable building materials were used throughout.
Entries and circulation were upgraded to improve access for persons with disabilities. New connections among the three buildings provide circulation throughout the complex. All electrical, plumbing, heating and ventilation systems were replaced.
