This $27 million facility showcases superb design and advanced technology. Within the 55,000-square-foot facility, the 300-seat, acoustically perfect performance hall feels both magnificent and intimate. A skylighted lobby atrium serves as a multi-purpose space for special events and gatherings. A wide range of teaching classrooms exist, as well as multimedia spaces with recording capability, seminar rooms and labs. Twelve practice rooms are designed for percussion and grand pianos. A large, two-story rehearsal room also serves as a recital hall. Five other rooms support chamber music, a cappella and world music. A new music library provides flexible storage, listening stations and comfortable reading areas.
The music center forms a new gateway for the campus’ south quadrant, and the building design fosters interaction and integration within the music department while also making the music program more visible and accessible to the university and community. Although classrooms, practice rooms and performance spaces dominate the program, elements such as interconnecting stairs, shared lounge space, courtyards and clustered offices encourage chance encounters and informal discourse that enhance learning and research activity.

“Great blend of neutral color and a variety of materials. Conveys a sense of the arts.”–2007 jury
