Thomas R. Grover Middle School

This new two-story middle school in central New Jersey was completed and occupied for the start of classes in September 1999. This is the second middle school for this rapidly growing school district.
The district’s 2001/2005 Committees studied projected enrollment trends, grade-level organization and reviewed research regarding school size. Assisted by the architect, the committee studied several options, and a phased building program, including a new middle school, was initiated. The district enacted a grade-level reorganization program to accommodate the recommended K-5, 6-8 and 9-12 alignment.
The linear features of the new middle school are emphasized by multitone horizontal brick banding. Vibrantly colored barrel-vaulted entrance canopies are secured with metal bracing units, flanked by brick pilasters. Working closely with the administration and educators, the architect designed the school to support the middle school educational philosophy, which calls for a supportive and self-contained environment to assist students during the critical time when they move from the more controlled elementary school to the more independent high school.
