Thomas Nelson Community College, Hampton III Classroom Building Renovation
Hampton, Virginia
The architect designed a complete renovation of the Hampton III Building for Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC). The existing facility is a one-story, 45,000-square-foot office building acquired by the college and converted to office and classroom use. Prior to conversion, it served as a multiple-tenant office building and was retrofitted sporadically to accommodate the existing functions.
The renovated facility enabled TNCC to relocate the Nursing Training Center, faculty and administration from a site that the school had outgrown.
The color scheme and floor patterns took their inspiration from the college’s colors and logo; the resulting inlaid wave pattern adds visual interest and gives the illusion of depth and width to the hallways, which now house banquet seating for students, complete with outlets for laptops. The wave pattern continues up the wall in the lobby, behind the banquet seating, in a tile installation designed to draw the eye upward. Down the hall in the student lounge area, the half-moon design is replicated in a ceiling installation.
The building has been LEED certified.
