The dramatic renewal of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology is the result of a collaboration of the Ballou Justice Upton Architects’ team with members of Fairfax County Public Schools’ staff, as well as students and community, to advance the school’s mission.
TJHSST is a Virginia Governor’s School and has been ranked by Newsweek as the No. 1 high school in the nation; preserving the school’s character was essential. Transforming the 1962 building into a 21st-century, state-of-the-art environment required careful and deliberate planning.
The project achieves the goals of creating a signature visual presence and emulating the school’s culture of inquiry by adding a new two-story laboratory, dynamic learning & collaborative spaces, and media center with internet cafes. Specialized labs have been designed to enhance the curriculum and provide interactive experiences.
The new welcoming “namesake” Jeffersonian entrance leads into an uplifting Commons that provides enhanced social spaces, an abundance of natural light and views of the educational courtyard just beyond.
The renewal has created a beautiful, inspiring learning environment that encourages the celebration of science and technology.
