The new Thomas Carroll Elementary School replaces the existing, obsolete Carroll School that was built in 1913 on the same site. The school is 87,000 square feet and serves a culturally diverse population of 640 students in grades pre-K to 5.
The school fits tightly in its neighborhood school site and features an active interior “main street” that negotiates a one-story climb from the bottom to the top of the sloped site. It provides community access to the cafetorium, music room, gymnasium, health suite and administrative spaces. This space serves as a social gathering area, focusing views from the building to the adjacent play spaces and Connolly Park, a community asset.
Organized parallel to main street is a simple three-story “bar” of classrooms. A single-loaded academic corridor allows the circulation spaces to be filled with natural light and ventilation. Technological resources include the media center, computer lab, workstations in each classroom, and wireless network access in the cafetorium and main street.
