The Jackson Geological Sciences Building addition provides an inspiring teaching and research environment for students at the University of Texas at Austin. An earth-tone palette and natural materials including terrazzo flooring, organic carpet patterns, granite countertops and sedimentary fossilized limestone accents are used throughout the interior. These elements, with the surface lines in the plan design, make the building a backdrop upon which geological subjects are communicated, displayed, taught and learned. Wall spaces and display cases throughout the building provide settings for presentation of minerals, rocks, crystals and ideas.
The five-story addition contains multiple tiered auditoriums; standard and sloped classrooms; labs; administrative areas for the environmental-science department; faculty and graduate research offices and workrooms; and the Geological Sciences Foundation.
The classrooms are equipped with audiovisual devices such as rear-screen projection, integrated sound systems and light-dimming controls. Faculty and graduate research offices include collaboration spaces and are designed to accommodate future growth. The Geology Foundation on the fifth floor has conference rooms to accommodate foundation board meetings; historical collections and archives; and a roof terrace for receptions. A new library space in the building connects students to research.
